The Corte Madera Town Band was formed by Gwyn Lister and several members of the Corte Madera Community Foundation in April of 1996. Seventeen musicians attended the first practice with a unique instrumental range; from bongo drums, to two accordions the band was off and running with their first performance in Corte Madera's 1996 4th of July Parade.
The early Band practiced at an empty store in the Corte Madera Center, and then moved to the Corte Madera Town Hall, Council Chamber, and finally to their home in the Music Room of Redwood Highschool in Larkspur. Several of the original musicians are still with the Band. Over the years the Band has had many families in the Band – father and daughter, mother and daughter/son, and even grandchildren. The Band has played at many Corte Madera events, including their Lions Club-sponsored Spring Concert, as well as events in neighboring communities, including Novato, Petaluma, Mill Valley, San Rafael and San Francisco.
Throughout the years, the Band has been financed by donations from local citizens, the Corte Madera Community Foundation, and the Town of Corte Madera. In 1997 the Band received the “Neighbor Achievement Award” from the Marin Community Foundation.
The Corte Madera Town Band is a volunteer organization made of folks with a passion for playing music. There are about 40 musicians from all walks of life, ranging from high school teens to 80+ years young, traveling from 17 communities in the San Francisco Bay Area. The Band loves playing and practicing every Thursday evening from 7:15PM to 9:15PM. The musical repertoire varies from the inspirational and melodic to just plain fun. The Corte Madera Town Band plays classical concert band compositions, musicals, rock and roll, blues, jazz, marches and much more. Everyone comes to practice with a smile and there are always a few laughs.
The musical season runs from September through mid-July with approximately 10-13 performances throughout the year. Performances include the annual Spring Concert, Golden Gate Band Festival, the Fourth of July Parade in CorteMadera/Larkspur , an Octoberfest, several outdoor concerts, and a holiday concert.
The Band supports the local communities by inviting the local high school musicians to join us and by offering all our concerts free of charge. If you would like the band to perform for your community function, please contact the Band.
The Band is honored to be supported by the Corte Madera Community Foundation and the Corte Madera Town Council and is embraced by many good friends and neighbors in the community. The Band is also a member of the Association of Concert Bands.
If you currently play a band instrument (or string bass), or played in high school or college, and you want to play with an enthusiastic, supportive group, the Band would love to hear from you.
